Women Like You Take The Lead: Cindy Carpenter
Take The Lead salutes women who are doing extraordinary things in their communities. We will be recognizing women as part of our Women Like You Take The Lead campaign in the weeks leading up to the Take The Lead Challenge Launch Event on February 19th.
Cindy Carpenter is the President and Founder of Cortney’s Place, a nonprofit organization that raises the bar for the physically and mentally disabled. Cortney’s Place strives to provide the physically and mentally challenged persons with an array of opportunities through education and programs for life, giving them an ability to further reach their individual goals which elevate their personal potential as members of our community. Cindy’s daughter, Cortney, was born with multiple complications at birth, and endured numerous life threatening operations in the first weeks of her infant life and subsequently into her early childhood years causing her to be diagnosed with congenital nervous system malformations. Cindy started Cortney’s place when her daughter was about to graduate from the Scottsdale School District in Arizona at the age of 22, and she realized that there was no options for her daughter out in the community. So, she realized that she needed to start her own program. If that’s not taking the lead, then we don’t know what is. Cortney’s Place offers music therapy, hydro-therapy, pet therapy, physical activity, art therapy, community-based outings, and life skill development. “From the moment you walk in the door and you see the energy and you see what it looks like and you feel the passion that is behind this program, it is very uplifting,” Cindy said.
