Meryl Streep Somehow Gets Even More Awesome
Just when we thought we couldn’t love her any more, she goes and does something like this. Meryl Streep is launching a writing program for female screenwriters over 40 in partnership with New York Women in Film & Television.
The Writers Lab is intended to combat the “absence of the female voice in narrative film,” as women make up only 11% of the screenwriters in Hollywood. The new program will give eight women a chance to attend an intensive three-day workshop with experienced screenwriters later this year, and was funded with a significant contribution from Streep herself.
So Streep’s feminist year continues, from her equal-pay fist pump at the Oscars to her upcoming role as Emmeline Pankhurst in the film Suffragette, about the British women’s suffrage movement. Hollywood’s gender equality problem may have just met its match.
