I joined Gloria Feldt's mission to reach equity for women by 2025 because I have spent more than 30 years in journalism--and seen very little change--despite numerous leadership trainings, pushes by various nonprofits to increase women in the newsrooms, and a supposed desire by those newsrooms to actually see more women in leadership.
We are different because we focus on the woman, not the profession. Journalists like to think we are different, that our training needs to focus on the challenges that are so different from other industries. It's allowed us to stay stuck in time. Instead the 50 Women program focuses on women and their relationship to power. We support them with long-term coaching, something other nonprofit journalism leadership programs have failed to do. I should know they've asked me how we do it.. Finally, we request, demand, expect action from the women who are in our cohorts. They have to have a plan for their careers and they have to work together to move our industry forward.
