The Power To Assist Underprivileged Students and Teachers

At Legacy College Prep, my goal is to transform the educational landscape for underprivileged students and teachers in the Bronx. After 15 years in the traditional education system, I realized the system wasn’t working. I saw bright kids in underserved communities slip through the cracks of the system. I could see where students excelled - and where they needed more support. In founding my own school, I knew exactly what I would do differently - fill the gaps. We are proud to say that 100% of our graduating class of 2024 has been accepted into college.

As the founder, I established a college and career readiness program to make sure our students get a head start on their higher education journey. We also have a team of college counselors. While most schools have just one counselor, we employ four to five. This allows for a more personalized and supportive experience, helping students navigate the complexities of college applications and career planning. We also provide opportunities for our students to visit colleges starting in the 6th grade, covering the costs for these trips to ensure all students can participate.

In the field of education, we face significant challenges. Teacher shortages are common due to low pay, the demands of in-person work, and the overall perception of teaching as a difficult and undervalued profession. We strive to create a supportive and flexible work environment. We offer hybrid schedules, as many preparation periods use performance-based bonuses to recognize and reward their hard work.

2024 was our first graduating class, and it’s been amazing to see our students' academic success but also the effects from the environment for our teachers. My commitment to these changes has had a profound impact on our community, fostering an environment where both students and educators can thrive.
