The Power Of A Safety Bubble
By Geetika Singh
I often wonder how I would have survived without the power of the safety bubble that my parents taught me to create around me wherever I went. When struck with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 17, I was almost devastated. I was not even a graduate then and had a whole life ahead of me.
Type 1 diabetes meant taking multiple insulin injections daily, pricking self to check and monitor blood glucose level, eating the restrictive diet and exercising regularly. All this seemed to be next to impossible, especially when staying 1500km away from home in a hostel.
That is when my parents along with other family members taught me two simple yet powerful aspects to implement at all stages in life.
ONE: Acceptance of the condition and embracing it with positivity. That helped me to work on it rather than think against it. I never felt misery or self-pity. In fact, in a world where people were hiding various trivial issues, I body disclosed my condition at all stages in life and overcame multiple challenges in my favor. Be it professional or personal space.
TWO: Asking for help from others. I learned how to create a safety bubble around me wherever I went. To my surprise I experienced support from various sources. The safety bubble allowed me to take risks at various junctures in life without shying away. It helped me to live life and experience it to the fullest.
I consider myself lucky to have developed T1D since it has helped me to become empathic towards others and be one who believes in giving back to society. In one such effort I have shared some lessons in the form of a book for parents of T1D children, OVERCOMING CHALLENGES OF TYPE 1 DIABETES: A Parent’s Guide.
