Back in the day, I was a classic Type-A personality. I was driven and organized and
thought I was in full control of my life. However, this was an illusion.

It took a health scare to make me learn the importance of relaxation and letting go. Although I was the
picture of health, neurologists found a blood clot in my brain. I was in the hospital for two weeks and couldn’t move.

After I was released, I began experiencing chronic fatigue symptoms. Some days, I couldn’t get out of bed to exercise, work, or get my daughter to school.

This medical emergency changed everything. I took a much-needed break from graduate school and worked with holistic practitioners to receive massage therapy acupuncture, and advice about diet and exercise.  I focused on self-care and, above all, stopped trying to be Superwoman.

I’m happy to report that the blood clot in my brain disintegrated. It was a harrowing experience, but I became healthier, happier, more patient, and more kind. Today, I am a different person.

I’ve learned to tap into my innate power by “chilling out.” In my new book, The Art of Chilling Out for Women, I give 101 practical and easy ways for other women to do the same.  Chilling out should not be confused with unproductive laziness. It is the opposite; chilling out is proactive self-care required for productivity, relationship strength, physical health, and emotional well-being.

I am sure that many of you can identify with my old self. It’s never too late to figure it out and do what’s best for your physical, mental, and spiritual self.

As women, we benefit from collectively embracing the idea that rest, restoration, and rejuvenation is a natural and important life skill that demonstrates just how much we care for ourselves.
