Stories are powerful, but often under-examined aspects of how we interact with others in our workplaces. The stories influence how we recognize problems, define goals, and assign accountability. Stories also shape how we imagine our roles and responsibilities to others.
Sharing stories can be tricky, because story sharing involves navigating differences in power, assumptions and knowledge.
And some stories may not be ready to be shared.
In this talk, I discuss the power dynamics of story sharing, and how to discern whether we are acting in good faith both as listeners and tellers.
About the Speaker
Catherine R. Squires has been leading workshops in and outside of academia for over a decade, helping people explore new and effective ways of using stories to connect with each other and examine shared goals.
Squires is a professor at the University of Minnesota and a certified yoga instructor (RYT-200 YA). She combines narrative studies with her yoga training to create workshops and presentations that engage body and mind. She lives in Minnesota and is always on the lookout for interesting birds.
