Hillary Clinton Announces 2016 Presidential Bid - Washington
It’s official: Hillary Clinton is running for President of the United States. She announced her candidacy on Sunday via a video posted to her website. Her decision to enter the 2016 presidential race wasn’t exactly a shocker—despite years of “maybe I will, maybe I won’t” statements, everyone on the planet pretty much knew this was coming—but Twitter was still buzzing for hours after the video went live.
Now that her campaign has launched, a quick note about Take The Lead and Hillary Clinton.
Take The Lead is nonpartisan, and therefore we won’t be endorsing Clinton (or any other candidate) at any point during the 2016 presidential race. That being said, we are a women’s leadership organization dedicated to achieving women’s leadership parity in all sectors by 2025, and we think it’s a pretty big deal that a woman is a serious contender to become the most powerful person in the world.
Given the historic nature and far-reaching impact of a potential Clinton victory, you can expect to see a fair amount of Clinton coverage around these parts in the coming months. We won’t be focusing as much on the polls or the controversies of the week, but we will be examining the effect she’s having on how people feel about women’s leadership.
Word on the street is that Clinton will make gender equality issues like paid parental leave a centerpiece of her campaign, and we’re thrilled about that; we think these issues deserve as much attention as possible from politicians on both sides of the aisle. So, if Clinton makes a forceful case for ending the gender wage gap on the campaign trail, we’ll be cheering—and we’ll cheer just as loudly if a Republican says the same thing.
There’s no doubt about it: these are exciting times to be someone who cares about advancing women.
