Our conference planning committee can tell you I was obsessed with scheduling this conference to coincide with Leap Day. Why? Because it’s one of the most feminist of holidays. And I love the symbolism.
If you’re a nerd about women’s history as I am, you might like this article I wrote about the history of Leap Day — and its meaning for today — in Fast Company a few years ago.
In short, February 29 is the every-fourth-year adjustment for the Gregorian calendar’s imperfections. This inspired a leap of blazing hope for women in 5th Century Ireland, when St. Bridget persuaded St. Patrick to declare that a woman could do the unthinkable: ask a man to marry her. Leap Day was codified in 12th century Scotland (again initiated by a woman, Queen Margaret). The tradition continued, highlighted by merry belittlements to remind women of their lack of power the rest of the time. For example, women on the prowl for a husband were to sport red petticoats as fair warning so the poor beleaguered men could see them from a distance and dash in the other direction.
Leap Day privilege now seems an amusing anachronism But women still have a long way to go to reach full equality. When it comes to leadership, we are only halfway there.
That’s where Take The Lead comes in with its training, coaching, and 50 Women Can Change the World programs that have been called (for example) “life changing” and “jet fuel for my career.”
So leap already!
