New WFH Income: 7 Ways To Monetize Your Quarantine Hustle
Most everyone I know has an income shift or even income elimination due to the shelter in place mandate due to COVID-19. So many in event planning, retail, hospitality, restaurants, and pretty much anything that requires other people and is considered non-essential have been laid off, or their income streams have dropped.
According to MarketWatch, “Some 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits in a recent week — the highest ever increase in weekly jobless claims.”
Complicating that scenario are women with young children and adult children who haven been laid off and moved back home. More mouths to feed, less money in the bank.
“According to Global Workplace Analytic’s analysis of U.S. Census and Bureau of Labor Statistics data, 56 percent of Americans work in a profession that could be done at least part-time from home. The other 44 percent may now find themselves needing to rely on newfound remote opportunities for an income as well,” KNMR reports.
Researchers at Insurify compiled a snapshot of the top remote jobs and they include survey taker, transcriber, website tester. These jobs can be temporary and you can start now. Forbes also has a robust list of nearly 30 types of jobs and how to directly apply for them from accountant to renovation design consultant.
What hustles can you start to do today to generate an immediate income stream?
Connect to a virtual employer. This is the simplest to do. Be ready to prove your skills and expertise. “There are companies around the world that hire virtual employees for projects and tasks, so opportunities exist in design, programming, creative writing, sales, marketing, customer service, virtual assistance, language translation and an assortment of technical skills. Popular platforms for work-from-home jobs include Upwork, Zirtual, TaskRabbit, Freelancer, MediaBistro and Guru,” according to AZ Central.
Do you have distance learning content? With millions of children, teens and young adults learning from home K-12 and at the university level, do you have modules you can offer for a minimal price? If you can offer tutorials, say, in “Writing an Essay,” or “Your Toughest Math Problems Solved,” perhaps you can put out free videos on YouTube and then in the video state that you are available for one on one virtual tutoring. Charge by the hour. Or you can go through an established company. MarketWatch reports, “With schools shifting to distance learning, parents who work full-time jobs are tapping into virtual tutors. One platform, Varsity Tutors, a both online and in-person tutoring platform, launched Virtual School Day, a program that provides daily lessons to K-12 students free of charge. Teachers and people with a background in education are paid as much as $40 an hour for teaching Virtual School Day classes. The service has a “higher bar” for Virtual School Day teachers.”
Translate. Do you speak more than one language? You can translate manuscripts or transcripts. According to Forbes, you can check these out. Conservation Certification Reviewer – Bilingual: Review background instructions and materials relating to the review process, participate in annualized and unpaid training and offer feedback while ensuring the review of continuous improvement. Spanish Proofreader: Part-time, temporary position. Remote. Will create educational experiences, conduct research, develop content, perform analyses, collaborate with team and provide expertise. 1+ year related experience required.
You can deliver. If you have a car, and you have a mask, gloves, sanitizer and the ability to wipe down the surfaces you touch, this might be a feasible option. “With more restaurants announcing they had to close dine-in services, drivers who can deliver food from pizza stores, restaurants or catering companies are more in demand than usual. Shipt, or other grocery service drivers, are also more needed than ever, with a major logjam of requests from customers who want to avoid large groups of people at grocery store— both to avoid the hassle and to reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19.With the pandemic further driving online retail sales, employees who can deliver those increased orders for companies are like gold right now. In addition to launching a $25 million fund to help its network of drivers, Amazon announced it is hiring 100,000 warehouse workers amid the pandemic,” according to ClickOrlando.
Identify your skill that can be monetized. First, what do you do professionally? Look at your latest resume and see what you have identified as your professional skills. Can you teach how to code, how to build a great website, how to make a video? What tangible skill are you great at that can produce an outcome? According to InvestmentU, “Whatever your field of expertise, do your best to social distance and take your lessons from the classroom to the chat room. Check out Udemy if you’re interested.” That platform will allow you to be an instructor, but you can also go it alone. On the personal side, what hobby do you have that you are expert at that you can do video training on and charge for the training? Do you know how to paint, how to organize a closet, how to salsa dance? Even if you know how to color your roots, many would pay for a video lesson at a time when all hair salons are closed.
Search if this field is already crowded. The good news is that means there is a lot of interest. The bad news is unless you can build a following through your networks, you may not be able to make a dent. If you have a presence on social media, whether it is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Linked In, let your networks know what you are doing. See what kind of interest you can generate.
Create lively webinars. Eventbrite has tutorials on how to post your event and invite people. Make sure that your page looks professional, proofread and copy edit for grammatical and spelling mistakes. Research how much to charge for a 30-minute or one-hour tutorial. A sliding scale of payment is also a good idea. You can have different levels of fees, for students and seniors. One suggestion is not to make it over $50 for a one hour. Sign up with PayPal business or another payment app to link payment directly to your account. Give yourself two to three weeks to get the word out about your event. Learn from your mistakes.
Even before COVID-19 forced everyone other than essential workers inside to WFH, remote work was popular.
Forbes reports, According to a report done by FlexJobs—an online service for telecommuting, flexible schedule, part-time and freelance jobs—there has been a spike in the amount of people doing remote work in the U.S., and wanting to travel is one of the top reasons why people say they work remotely. Over the last five years, remote work grew 44% and between 2005 to 2017, there was a 159% increase in remote work. Today, there are 4.7 million Americans working remotely, or 3.4% of the population—that’s up from 3.9 million U.S. workers in 2015.
