Jupiter and Saturn and Steinem and Moore + You Converge This Week
Issue 153 — December 14, 2020
This week Jupiter and Saturn will be observably closer to each other than they have been since and they won’t be as close again until 2080. This is a phenomenon not to be missed! The clearest view will happen on my wedding anniversary and the winter solstice, December 21. How cool is that?

But easier to find and equally cool will be another rare phenomenon that you won’t want to miss: Julianne Moore and Gloria Steinem in an intimate conversation with YOU, moderated by two graduates of our 50 Women Can Change the World programs. Charreah Jackson, from the 2020 journalism cohort and Jyoti Sarda from the 2018 media and entertainment cohort. This great event will occur on December 15 at 8pm eastern time. We are keeping this great event small and intimate so it’s not one of those huge zooms or overproduced galas. It will actually be easy and fun. And a great holiday gift to someone who needs to hear the message — maybe to yourself.
I wrote this to look back and see what we managed to do in 2020 in spite of pandemics of coronavirus and racial injustice that resulted in our having to do our work with severely limited resources. I feel VERY good about that and our vision for 2021. But the truth is that though this was supposed to be the year we scaled up, instead we were set back, by a lot. I was almost ready to throw in the towel but then I got this after delivering a webinar last week to 500 Air Force leaders:
I LOVED the session today. I am one of three women leaders in a 40 person squadron which is made up of men. Your words today made me feel seen and empowered. I’m tearing up writing this only because I think I have been slightly jaded by the masculinity of the military at times (not to be accusatory of it, but that is its typical nature) and I hadn’t realized it (I’ve been in the military for 15 years). I truly feel like your presentation spoke to me directly. It woke me up to the fact that I am more than capable and deserving of promotions and higher level positions based on my performance, and that my glass ceiling (even working in the middle of nowhere Wyoming) can be broken. I have been on an amazing journey of discovery this year: discovering what it means to have confidence and humility, giving grace to myself and believing in my extraordinary abilities, and opening myself up to the possibilities of more. Thank you for being a mentor and a teacher. I’m so proud to be alive in a world with someone like you in it!!

All proceeds for Take The Lead’s work for gender parity in leadership, including leadership training, role model events, and coaching such as our 50 Women Can Change the World(R) programs that have been proven effective in accelerating all women’s careers. Funds raised will provide scholarships to our courses for women whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted by COVID. And they will enable us to continue to provide free resources such as our award-winning blog and newsletter, podcasts, webinars, book events, and other solution-oriented thought leadership.
Studies predict that because women have left or been forced out of the workforce four times more than men, advances women have made in the workforce will be set back 10 years. Black, Latinx, and indigenous women have been especially hard hit. But instead of accepting that setback, we intend to make it an opportunity to make the workplace more equitable for both men and women, and that, in turn, will inspire a great comeback. We are committed to infusion all our curricula with racial justice principles as well as serving diverse women in all programs.
We think Gloria and Julianne will have lots to say about why women must be at the heart of recovery from the pandemic.

Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, political activist, and feminist organizer. She travels in this and other countries as an organizer and lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice. She lives in New York City.
Julianne Moore is an American actress and author. Prolific in film since the early 1990s, she is particularly known for her portrayals of emotionally troubled women in both independent and blockbuster films, and has received many accolades, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award and two Golden Globes. Time magazine named Moore one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2015.
Charreah K. Jackson (@Charreah) serves as a global coach, journalist and consultant.She is a contributor for ELLE and the New York Times and previously served as Senior Editor at ESSENCE, where she worked for a decade empowering millions of women. Charreah is the founder of Shine Army, a communication and transformation agency and the bestselling author of Boss Bride: The Powerful Woman’s Playbook for Love & Success published by Macmillan Books. She is a proud graduate of the 2020 cohort of Take the Lead’s 50 Women Can Change the World in Journalism program.
Jyoti Sarda brings twenty years as a senior-level global marketing executive with major studios and blue chip brands to the development of impact-creating, documentary and narrative content through her company Nimble Media LLC. Her current production is the award-winning two-part series, AND SHE COULD BE NEXT, which follows a defiant women of color led movement to transform politics from the ground up and recently aired on POV(PBS). She is also Co-Executive Producer of EQUAL MEANS EQUAL, an award-winning documentary feature that is an unflinching examination of the discrimination against women built into the US legal system. Until recently, Jyoti was Vice President of Marketing at Paramount Home Media where she led all facets of global marketing operations for Paramount partner brands, while overseeing international acquisitions. Prior to Paramount, she worked at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Jyoti serves on the boards of GlobalGirl Media, an organization that trains young women to become civically engaged through citizen journalism and LAANE, a leading LA-based social justice nonprofit.
