Gender Equal Workplaces Are Happy Workplaces
A Swedish economist told the recent U.N. Commission on the Status of Women that workplaces with a balance of men and women are more satisfied, perform better, and improve their national economies.
Asa Lofstrom, a professor at the Umea School of Business and Economics, noted, “Not only do men and women feel better when working together, but they also seem to perform better.” Lofstrom also estimated that achieving an equal mix of men and women in the workforce would decrease women’s poverty, increase economic independence for both sexes, and boost the European Union economy by 20 to 25 percent. Her statements were based on research by Katrin Olafsdottir, a professor at Reykjavik University in Iceland.
If gender-equal companies are happier and more profitable, someone should tell the tech industry—imagine how much more successful they’d be if men didn’t outnumber women three to one.
